Music for Your Years
Know Your Instrument: Melodica
Origin: Italy
The melodica, also known as pianica, blow organ or key harmonica, is a free-reed instrument similar to the harmonica. The body of the instrument is made up of a sleek musical keyboard and it is played by holding the handle, which is attached to the back of the keyboard. Melodicas are unusual because unlike most conventional woodwind instruments, they make use of a piano keyboard rather than a specialised fingering system using holes and/ or buttons to produce sound.
