Read a Book
One's Own, Yet Different by Meena Kakodkar and illustrated by Charutha Reghunath (Age: 7+ years)
Banu is a bubbly young girl who loves to spend time with her grandmother. While the two share an amazing rapport, sparks fly when the grandmother opens a chest with shimmering jewellery. Banu asks about the jewellery and also wonders why the jewellery will go to her aunt and not her mother. Her grandmother is forced to rethink age old rules and finally makes a decision when she is taken ill and is looked after by her daughter, Banu’s mother. Why does the grandmother change her mind? Read the book to find out. Published by Katha Books.

Watch It
Bioscopewala
Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s book ‘Kabuliwala’, ‘Bioscopewala’ is a moving tale about Rehmat Khan, a bioscope operator and a little girl named Minnie. Rehmat used to show children movies on the bioscope, which is how he met Minnie and formed a close bond with her.

Minnie was the same age as his own daughter whom he had to leave behind in Afghanistan. Why did Rehmat leave his country and how did Minnie change his destiny? Watch the movie to find out.

Learn Something New
Newspaper Art
Newspapers are so versatile that they can be reused in many arts and crafts projects. They can be used to make bead jewellery, boxes, wall hangings and even place mats. To make place mats, use pages with bright colours. Cut them to an A3 size. Fold each page to make strips or rolls of the same size. Use Scotch tape to stick the folded strips or rolls together to form a mat. Then use running stitch to sew the strips into a single place mat.

Music For Your Ears
Know Your Instrument: Bassoon
Origin: Western Europe
The bassoon is a woodwind, double-reed instrument. It is usually made of maple wood, brass and nickel silver. Folded upon itself, the U-shaped conical tube stands 4ft tall. As it is too big to be held by hand, a bassoon is held along the side of the player’s face and supported by a seat trap. Unlike other wind instruments, all 10 fingers–with the thumbs playing an important role–need to be used to play the bassoon.

Green World
Meet a New Plant: Liriodendron Tulipifera
The Liriodendron tulipifera or tulip tree is an ornamental tree. It grows in both well-drained and clay soils and sandy, acidic soils under direct sunlight. During the months of May and June, the tree produces tulip-shaped flowers with greenish-yellow petals.

The tree is quite a sight to see in autumn, when it turns a vibrant yellow colour. This oval-shaped tree is a source of food for many birds and animals.

Meet a New Bird: Megalaima Haemacephala
Megalaima haemacephala or the coppersmith barbet has a crimson coloured throat with yellow eye rings around its red-margined eyes.

They are grassy green in colour with yellowish green and dark green underparts. These birds are known for their loud voice.
Meet a New Animal: Cuon Alpinus
Cuon alpinus also known as the dhole, Asiatic wild dog or the Indian wild dog, is an endangered species found in the jungles of Asia. The size of a German shepherd, dholes inhabit a range of habitats, from deciduous forests to tropical rainforests. Even though they form a part of the canine family, dholes are quite different from their canine counterparts. For instance, they have two molars instead of three and only one cusp rather than the usual two to four. These carnivorous animals have reddish-brown fur on the upper body and a white neck, chest and stomach. Dholes are known for their distinctive whistling sound.
