Examination Special: Revise Using K-W-L Charts
by Reshmi Sen Singh, a freelance soft skill and teacher development trainer based in Bengaluru.

A K-W-L chart is a graphic organiser that helps a student organise content during and after learning.

Here’s how you can make a K-W-L chart.

STEP 1: Make three columns on an A4 sheet of paper and label them as:
K: What you KNOW about the topic
W: What you WANT to know
L: What you LEARNT

STEP 2: In the first column, ‘K’, write down all the things you already know about the topic.

STEP 3: To fill the second column, ‘W’, ask these six question prompts– who, what, where, when, why and how–to figure out what the gaps are in your learning.

STEP 4: Before you fill up the third column, ‘L’, ensure that you have thoroughly revised all the topics listed in the second column. Now confidently make a list of all the things you have learnt!
