This book is dedicated to tomboys everywhere. Anoushka or Nooni, the protagonist of the novel, is one such girl. She loves food, but can’t cook. She loves to be outdoors and when she is forced indoors, she finds solace in reading. Nooni’s school has just broken for summer vacations and she is packed off to her grandparent’s village in Karnataka. Though she is surprised at the pace of life there, she finds herself doing odd jobs that keep her busy. She also learns various skills there—papad making, organising picnics and riding a cycle. The book warms up when Nooni stumbles upon an ancient fabled step-well right in the middle of a forest. Through her writing, Murty introduces children to village life, something that most city-dwelling kids miss out on. A book worth reading.
